About Us

The Asian Medical Students’ Association – Service-Oriented Medical Advocates (AMSASOMA) is a non-stock, non-profit, non-government organization of medical students in Cebu Institute of Medicine. The organization seeks to provide different avenues for medical students in their pursuit to become holistic and relevant physicians in the future particularly in the realm of community and public health and research. The organization also seeks to serve as a platform for advocacies among medical students pushing for better health care and social justice in the Philippines.

"Service-Oriented Medical Advocates" (SOMA) entails that the organization is formed, supported and run by medical advocates, both students and practicing professionals alike who are united by one ultimate reason: PASSION FOR SERVICE. "Soma" in the medical parlance means "cell body" which is the most basic unit of life. The organization envisions contributing to the world at large by first creating platforms and projects that will benefit the basic unit of society- the family.

AMSA-SOMA is a member organization of AMSA-Philippines, representing the medical students enrolled in the Philippines in two of the biggest international medical student organizations in the world: the Asian Medical Students’ Association-International (AMSA International) and the International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA).

Committed to the parallel goals of service and excellence of AMSA-Philippines, AMSA-SOMA has continuously sought to develop a deepened social consciousness and a sense of active participation and contribution among its members, not only in relation to pressing health issues but also to other relevant issues affecting our society as well. The organization's holistic approach to health and its dynamic knowledge cultivated through education, research, and professional exchange has always been its defining core: "think global, act local".
